In his words, the beginning of his high school experience was rough; “there were good teachers trying to help me and all, but I was just an ignorant kid.”
With support of school staff and community partners, he found his footing and began to excel both in and out of school. His final semester schedule was a mix of both teacher-led and online courses, and a hands-on internship with YouthBuild. He says the experience and OSHA certification gained through his carpentry internship led him to find work in the trades.
He currently has a full-time job as an electrician in training, and takes night courses at vocational adult program toward his journeyman licensure. Reflecting on his experience at the Career Academy, he shared, “in the end it was all worth it to take everybody’s advice and take the initiative to step up to the plate.”
